Pre launch strategy: waitlists and teasers on X
The launch post gets the attention, but the pre launch weeks decide who sees it. A good pre launch strategy gives you two assets on launch day: a list of people you can message directly, and an X audience primed to engage in the first hour.
What pre launch is for
Three outcomes, in order of importance:
- People to notify on launch day. A waitlist, early users, a group chat. Direct messages produce the early engagement that X uses to decide distribution.
- A warm founder account. Recent conversations with the right people, so the launch post is shown to them.
- Curiosity. People who have seen glimpses and want the full thing.
How to build a waitlist that converts
- One field. Email only. Every extra field halves signups.
- In the bio. The founder’s X bio is the highest converting place for an AI product waitlist link.
- A reason to join early. First access, extended trial, credits. Be specific.
- A confirmation that sets expectations. “You will hear from us on launch day” beats a generic thank you.
- Talk to the list before launch. One short update two weeks out keeps people from forgetting why they joined.
What to post before launch
Three types of posts, rotated through the week:
- Problem posts. The pain your product solves, with specifics. These attract the right people without selling.
- Build posts. Short clips, a design decision, a surprising thing the model did. They show progress and make the launch feel inevitable.
- Conversation. Replies to the accounts your buyers follow. This is how a small account gets seen.
Three posts a week is enough. Consistency beats volume.
The teaser sequence (launch week)
In the final week, switch from building to teasing:
- Day minus 5: a problem post that names the pain clearly.
- Day minus 3: a 10 second sneak peek clip with no explanation.
- Day minus 1: the date and hour reveal: “Tomorrow, 9am PT.”
Each teaser should earn replies. Reply to all of them; those people are your first engagers on launch day.
Pre launch with no audience
If the founder account has almost no followers, the pre launch phase matters even more, and amplification has to do more of the work. We wrote a separate guide on how to launch an AI tool with no audience.
Measuring pre launch
Track three numbers weekly: waitlist size, replies per post on the founder account, and the number of relevant creators who have seen the product. If all three are flat after three weeks, change the posts, not the launch date.
Check where your pre launch stands with the launch readiness score. The audience section measures exactly this.
FAQ
How do you build a waitlist before launch?
Put a simple signup in the founder's X bio, post about the problem and short product clips regularly, and give people a concrete reason to join early, such as first access or a launch perk.
How early should pre launch marketing start?
Four to six weeks before launch day for a founder account that is not active yet. Less if the account already posts regularly about the problem space.
